The first score of the game came in the third quarter when Hackensack finally pushed over to take the lead. The Comets took over on their own 23 and immediately drove on down the field with Meli doing most of the work, assisted by Jim Onorato and Jim Trobiano. After moving to Teaneck 15, Hackensack took to the air and netted a six-pointer as Trobiano flipped a pass to to George Clarke in the end zone. Fred Weisenbach's attempted placement was partially blocked and was not good.
Teaneck's Highwaymen came right back to knot the count after taking the kickoff. Gerry Lupo brought the ball back to the Teaneck 38. Frank Scolpino was thrown for a six-yard loss but on the second down, Rollie Schuster broke through the right side of Hackensack and went down the field 68 yards for Teaneck's lone touch-down of the afternoon. Kelly's attempted plunges for the extra point was stopped cold.
The game remained tied until early in the fourth quarter. Hackensack took possession on its own 32 and immediately took to the air. A pass from Trobiano to John Nochta was good to the Teaneck 41. Another pass by Trobiano, this time to Herman Krone but the ball on the Teaneck 15. After one incomplete pass. Meli took the ball and raced around the right side of the line to score standing up. Meli added the extra point with a plunge. The Highwaymen came back to drive to the Hackensack 15 but Trobiano put the game on ice by intercepting a pass by Schuster. |
